It has been known a few days ago that Maurizio Cattelan's work "Banana stuck to a wall" has been sold for more than six million euros. And that is precisely what it was created for, to criticize the art market and because of the art market its message has died.
This has caused a small controversy among my friends in a WhatsApp group between those who said that this is a real piece of crap and me, or me alone against the world. My friends are scandalized and even a friend has made fun of it by putting some sheets of paper as if on a plant. My defense has not been easy but I have put up a fight anyway. My position is clear; to do such a thing you first have to be an established artist and after that you can do whatever you want, that is, you have to first show what you are worth in the creative world. And my other defense has been very clear and simple; no one before has thought of such a thing.
But if you were still not happy with that, I have told you that this work has generated controversy between its defenders and detractors, and that generated debate is art, therefore, its objective fulfilled.
I never thought when I saw this work that it was a real piece of shit because at first I was surprised that someone was capable of exposing something like that, with courage, and that someone had come up with a banana stuck to a wall.
It is true that art in general and contemporary art in particular is a subjective vision of the world, including the subliminal message in which it is submerged, and the eyes of all those who observe it are also subjective. There are messages for all types of people because art is multifaceted and for example for the author this was a criticism of the art market as I said at the beginning, but for me without hearing the author's explanation it could have been life, life because this installation is not something inert, it is alive, because the banana, like life, withers and being stuck to the wall, what I interpret is what we cling to in order to stay alive. When that banana withers, that banana falls, it detaches itself from life.
