#PINTURA - La Verbena de Maruja Mallo + #PAINTING - La Verbena by Maruja Mallo

Talking about Maruja Mallo is referring to a fundamental figure of the Generation of '27 (Generación del 27), an artist whose career embraced both magic realism and surrealism. Her legacy commands profound respect, not only for her talent but also for her active participation in the Spanish artistic avant-garde. Furthermore, she was a staunch defender of feminism and freedom in a European context polarized by antagonistic social models.

To contextualize the work to which we are referring—identified as La verbena (1927)—it is necessary to point out that it represents a lively popular festival in Madrid. A plethora of characters is displayed within it, wandering immersed in the revelry of the celebration. This impressive canvas is configured as a "pictorial collage" where motley figures are juxtaposed: ranging from the Guardia Civil and sailors on leave, to costumes, giants and big-heads (gigantes y cabezudos). All of them are compactly represented, almost like a mural intended to be exhibited in an official space.

The unique formal rigor of the faces of some protagonists in this painting leads me, in an interpretive and bold manner, to propose the concept of Neogrequismo (a denomination of my own creation). This style approaches the hieratic quality of the icons of religious representation of the Eastern Orthodox Church, a characteristic that directly recalls the treatment El Greco gave to the figures in his canvases. Coincidentally, this rigor in the faces that I place in my Neogrequismo is reserved for figures that symbolize authority, such as the civil guard (guardia civil) and a character who evokes Queen Isabella the Catholic.

We are, without a doubt, facing a pictorial work of great interpretive depth, whose possible readings are as numerous and diverse as the people who approach it with humility and open-mindedness to contemplate it.

#PINTURA - DOS ESCALERAS POR Gertrude Abercrombie + #Painting - Two Ladders by Gertrude Abercrombie

This painting by Gertrude Abercrombie brings me an inner peace that comes from its strange balance. It's the image of a night without stars, and I would even venture to say, without wind. Just a waning moon and a solitary cumulus cloud above a carefully arranged stage, where some abandoned stairs make me wonder: am I on a theater stage, in an opera scene, or in a dream I don't want to wake up from?

"Don't let anyone wake me up!" I would yell from a room at the far end of an infinite hallway in one of those old houses. I want to keep dreaming (looking at) this painting that torments me because, in a way, it forces me to reflect on... who knows what!

The stormy sea this work by Gertrude has made me travel to, despite the monotonous balance of the painting's first glance, makes me want to climb those stairs as the last earthly action I want to perform, heading to that cloud, or that moon, leaving behind the worldly noise we've had to live with. Seeing things from above, not without a lot of sadness for the loved ones you leave behind, provides a perspective close to the vision of God with his ultimate power.

It's a pleasant night, as I said before, without stars or wind, where I, as a normal human being, look from my earthly position without trying to be God, after waking up from the slumber that made me dream, immersed in a philosophically restorative dream.

#GRABADO - Reina de la Noche de Yoshijiro Urushibara / #ENGRAVING - Queen of the Night by Yoshijiro Urushibara

Does it look like it? Yes, it does, and what it looks like is one of those nights for a brutal, bloodthirsty and grotesque session of lycanthropy. By the way, those cypresses where a frightening full moon appears, represent death or the peace of cemeteries, as we want to interpret it. That moon winks at us, it warns us that the slaughter is coming and almost no one will be safe.

The simplicity of this engraving is spectacular. Some greens here in the form of slender spears, a sky between grey and light green, and a yellow moon that, depending on how you look at it, disguises itself as the sun, make this work a pact with a relaxed and not imposed peace, where observation gives us guidelines to immerse ourselves in that haven of nocturnal tranquility waiting for who knows if a woman or a werewolf to take us to eternal peace.

Whoever comes, we will wait for them without surprises, totally isolated from everything that happens around us and with our gaze fixed like a target on that deep landscape that calls us to occupy it, but if we dare to disturb that haven of peace of that place we will have desecrated a sanctuary not created for humans and that belongs only to the world of art.
