#DESIGN - The Dark Side of the Moon

 This is the ultimate expression. Against a background of absolute darkness, a prism decomposes white light into the chromatic spectrum that surrounds us. There is no concept purer or more basic to illustrate Pink Floyd's musical genius in The Dark Side of the Moon.

When I saw this cover for the first time, it was impossible for me not to buy the album. Just as its design conveyed to me, the music made me think, dream, feel moved, and, above all, project an idyllic future. The creator of such a masterpiece was the illustrator George Hardie, under the direction of the legendary graphic design collective Hipgnosis. The result is a work that is simple, direct, reflective, striking, and hypnotic; in short, a true direct hit to the waterline of our senses.

There was a time, now a bit distant, when designing vinyl record covers was an art reserved only for a chosen few. Through the cover, the listener could sense the sonic universe hidden inside the vinyl. It was a massive advertising challenge: the designer had to sell something conceptual, a purely auditory and emotional experience that could not be touched or quantified. Making music enter through the eyes... now that was the true art of design.
