#ARQUITECTURA - Trampantojo, estuco y un burro: el realismo mágico del hotel Laiva Plaza + #ARCHITECTURE - Trompe-l'œil, Stucco, and a Donkey: The Magical Realism of the Laiva Plaza Hotel +#建筑设计 - 错视画、灰泥与毛驴:Laiva Plaza 酒店的魔幻现实主义 + #ARCHITECTURE - Trompe-l'œil, stuc et un âne : le réalisme magique de l'hôtel Laiva Plaza

We are in Mexico, and in Mexico, anything is possible. Specifically in San José del Cabo, standing before the facade of the Laiva Plaza Hotel, a work designed by the studio RA! Arquitectos. Its envelope, executed in a vibrant red stucco, becomes a stage where shadows play at will to challenge our perception. It is a modern trompe-l'œil: a three-dimensional canvas where natural light acts with the clear intention of confounding our senses.

However, on this occasion, it is not just the geometric design—impeccable, clean, and of a resounding minimalism—that captivates the eye. What truly disrupts the scene and endows it with a unique mysticism is the figure of a donkey, appearing aimlessly in the background of the perspective.

On a technical or editorial level, I do not know if its presence is real, if it is a careful digital composition, or if it was simply a beautiful whim of chance. Regardless of its origin, the irruption of this animal—which returns our gaze with the same surprise as the photographer behind the camera—is what grants this snapshot its true artistic value. It is no mere bystander; it is the soul of the image.

Its apparent tranquility conveys a profound visual narrative: stripped of the burden and the pitchers I imagine it carried during its workday, the animal seems to enjoy a truce in the midst of avant-garde architecture. It is the poetics of a liberation; a reminder that even a donkey has the right to rest.

Far from being a simple architectural photograph, this image becomes a lyrical manifesto and a defense of animals. It clothes in tenderness a living being that observes us with the same moving nobility that its own silhouette projects. A work where the rigor of design and the spontaneity of rural life completely blur together.

#FOTOGRAFÍA - Le Corbusier por Irving Penn, Nueva York 1947 + #PHOTOGRAPHY - Le Corbusier by Irving Penn, New York 1947 + #摄影 - 勒·柯布西耶,欧文·佩恩摄于纽约,1947年 + #PHOTOGRAPHIE - Le Corbusier par Irving Penn, New York 1947

To speak of Le Corbusier is to invoke one of the most decisive and influential figures in modern history. However, reducing him to architecture would be a mistake: he was also a prolific writer —famous for his lyrical The Poem of the Right Angle— and an urban planner whose vision, as bold as it was controversial, redefined our cities. He has recently been dubbed the "prophet of modernity," a title earned through his courage to suspend concrete on pilotis, crown buildings with rooftop gardens, and pierce façades with horizontal windows that capture natural light with surgical precision.

Beyond his blueprints, his essence was immortalized in Irving Penn’s portrait. In this image, we see a classic representation of a 20th-century man: a hand resting on his temple, a universal gesture evoking the thinker or philosopher of any era. It is a moment of introspection seeking support in the tangible. To this end, nothing is more symbolic than a piece of raw carpet, a material in its virginal state before being integrated into one of his masterful works.

The architect’s countenance and attire define the character with absolute clarity. The sobriety of his clothing and the play of chiaroscuro in the shot convey an almost mystical sensation: it is as if we were standing before a cardinal who has hung up his robes to embrace a new faith. Le Corbusier appears here as the high priest of the "church of modern constructivism," a man who exchanged incense for cement and cathedrals for machines for living.

#ARQUITECTURA #DISEÑO - Escalera por Oscar Niemeyer + #ARCHITECTURE #DESIGN - Staircase by Oscar Niemeyer + #建筑 #设计 — 奥斯卡·尼迈耶设计的楼梯 + #ARCHITECTURE #DESIGN - Escalier par Oscar Niemeyer

"This staircase by Oscar Niemeyer is more than just a functional element; it is an authentic structural fantasy. Faced with the historical imposition of the right angle—where lines intersect in a way that often lacks reflection, yet which I defend for the harmony and serenity it projects—today I must surrender to sinuosity.

Where architecture usually seeks the rigidity and order of rectitude, Niemeyer proposes an insurrection of the curve. It is a constructive caress that defies gravity. This staircase is, in essence, a river: a channel through which people flow, carrying with them the experiences and cultural sediments from every corner of the world. In this descent, there is no need for canoes or ships; we navigate it with our own steps, guided by the rhythm of the design.

As the Brazilian master himself professed:

'It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight line, hard and inflexible... What attracts me is the free and sensual curve—the curve I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the waves of the sea, in the body of the beloved woman.'

Before such a declaration, my rationalist convictions feel defeated. That is the nature of absolute truths: they admit no reply. But what has truly shaken my intellectual foundations is that final analogy: 'in the body of the beloved woman.' It is a statement of such resounding and real honesty that it turns architecture into something carnal—an idea that, quite simply, is beyond debate."

As the title of this post suggests, today we pause before the Tres Cantos II health center, located in the city of the same name, a work designed by architects Francisco Fariña, José Ignacio Carrasco, and Stephane Willig. From my perspective as a curious observer—and acknowledging that lack of expertise that sometimes allows us to see with fresher eyes—I cannot help but admire its profound horizontal beauty. The building is articulated through an evocative modular composition where large windows are shielded by a system of fixed concrete slats. These act as sunshades, protecting the interior from thermal rigors while providing the facade with a unique visual rhythm.

In this construction, ornamental flourishes are nowhere to be found. We are looking at architecture that embraces austerity and material honesty, prioritizing functionality and the well-being of the user; it is, in essence, a space designed by and for people. We often walk through our cities with our gaze anchored to the ground, overwhelmed by mental noise, without stopping to ask what story the concrete tells or who devised the spaces we inhabit. As the late Santiago Amón rightly warned: to discover the true city, one must learn to look above the third floor. Only then, when we lift our eyes, does the environment begin to reveal its best-kept secrets.

#ARQUITECTURA - La arquitectura como alma: un misterio racionalista + #ARCHITECTURE - Architecture as Soul: A Rationalist Mystery + #ARCHITECTURE - L'architecture comme âme : un mystère rationaliste + #建筑 - 建筑如灵魂:理性主义的迷思

I know nothing about this structure, and perhaps part of its magnetism lies in that very mystery. I do not know who drew its plans or its exact coordinates, but a single glance is enough to intuit its lineage: a pure functionalism, rationalist and a faithful heir to the Modern Movement.

If we were standing before a canvas instead of walls, we would undoubtedly speak of Suprematism. Its beauty rests on that elemental geometry that needs no ornament to move the soul. However, depending on the angle from which it is observed, the building seems to mutate; at times, it leans toward Brutalism, with that material honesty that so reminds us of the great master Le Corbusier. It is a work that plays with our perception, challenging us to label it as we move through it.

We are looking at a bold occupation of space, almost audacious for its time—likely a product of the architectural optimism of the 1950s or 60s. It is fascinating to see how light interacts with the facade: a play of shadows projected by those "hives" that guard the intimacy of the interior.

In contrast, the staircase stands as the luminous heart of the whole. Bathed by a vertical opening that runs from top to bottom, it becomes the building's spine. It is there where the bustle occurs, where life and movement pulse against the almost stone-like stillness of the exterior. It is, ultimately, its soul.

Pure lines, a kind of harmonic tyranny, and infinite reflection. It is a tuning fork that marks its own rhythm, lacking a beat but overflowing with a perfection from which it is impossible to look away. More than a building, it is a statement of intent.

To speak of transcendence—if such a thing exists—after death is to enter murky waters. However, in the face of finitude, art and architecture possess the mystical capacity to remind us that hope always finds a place to anchor. Today, I bring you a space I visit frequently as a necessary "reset" for the soul: the Parish of Santa Genoveva, in Majadahonda (Madrid). If this temple captivates me, it is precisely because of its bold contemporary language and its constructive honesty.

Designed by architects Ignacio Capapé and Justo Orgaz (Trasbordo Arquitectura), the church achieves a masterful synthesis of noble materials where wood, glass, stone, steel, and ceramics coexist in an almost tectonic harmony. From the outside, the building presents a robust volumetry, resembling a stone sarcophagus, escorted by a campanile independent of the main structure that evokes Italian tradition through purely modern formal clarity.

But the true journey begins upon crossing the threshold, where the most compelling elements unfold before the senses. It is impossible not to feel a sense of withdrawal when perceiving the intense, sweet aroma of wood that fills the space—a direct olfactory invitation to introspection and prayer. From my perspective, the proposal is delightfully orthodox: here, the "altarpiece" renounces traditional relief to integrate into the architecture, ceding the spotlight to a Virgin on the left and an orientalizing Christ that seems to levitate, suspended by subtle cables over the altar, presiding over the temple as King of Kings.

Despite its avant-garde nature, the temple does not forget its roots and is inspired by the basilical typology, organized into three naves and its corresponding apse. The finishing touch is provided by the geometric stained-glass windows that encircle the sides like a fraternal embrace, bathing the space in vibrant colors on sunny days. Ultimately, it is a marvel of contemporary architecture that you cannot miss if you seek a refuge of beauty and silence.

#FOTOGRAFÍA - Toronto por María Monterde + #PHOTOGRAPHY - Toronto by María Monterde + #PHOTOGRAPHIE - Toronto par María Monterde + #摄影 — 多伦多,作者:

There, on the horizon, Toronto emerges, the lookout of an ancient brigantine might have exclaimed after weeks of battling the waves. Today, the port has changed, but the sense of arrival is still governed by a towering vertical presence: the CN Tower.

At 553.3 meters tall, this structure—recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World—stands not only as an engineering milestone but as a conceptual lighthouse. It is curious how architecture transforms its purpose: while ancient lighthouses guided wood and sails toward solid ground, this telecommunications tower guides invisible flows of information. Its light no longer warns of reefs; instead, it broadcasts the radio and television waves that shape the opinions and imagery of our modern society.

Personally, I find a fascinating beauty in these cathedrals of communication. They are utilitarian sculptures that, in their quest to reach the sky, end up connecting our minds here on earth.

(CN Tower)

I'm on the second attempt at writing about this photograph, after deleting the previous text, but I'm trying again with a different approach.

This image you see here is like a dream I could have had inside this temple, which is not only of God but also of art, like the French church of Notre Dame du Haut by Le Corbusier. It is a temple that, like the Sagrada Familia by Gaudí in Barcelona, invites the expiation of our sins through prayer and contemplation (or recollection). It is a journey from guilt to joy by achieving divine forgiveness and, thus, attaining glory.

This fragment (or glimpse), this revelation that I contemplated before my eyes, is actually a trompe-l'oeil of the interior of this marvelous church, but without any desire to emulate the great master of architecture and architectural thought that Le Corbusier was.

I am nobody to blemish (or sully) his work, to be captivated by objects that remind me of something, but I am content with the existing interrelation between dreams and reality.

#URBANISMO / #ARQUITECTURA - West Village en Chengdu (China) de Liu Jiakun + #URBANISM / #ARCHITECTURE - West Village in Chengdu (China) by Liu Jiakun

China is a giant in many aspects, including urbanism and architecture. The best example of the combination of these two disciplines is Liu Jiakun's West Village-Basis Yard.

Unlike traditional models, this "non-neighborhood neighborhood" is permeable and open to the world. It combines housing, shopping centers, and offices that converge in a large central courtyard. This space features parks, sports facilities, and corridors that connect it to the rest of the city, integrating urban life in a fluid way.

For many, this project represents the triumph of the communal over the individualism of Western society. This space embodies a vision that prioritizes coexistence and solidarity, showing a different approach to urbanism and architecture from a holistic, communist perspective.

In addition to this distinctive model, China is firmly committed to the environment and sustainable cities.

Personally, I am fascinated to see a work of art at the service of humanity and sustainability, with a clear political perspective. These are vibrant neighborhoods where people interact and connect, which can be interpreted as a holistic vision from a class-based perspective.

Let's surrender to the evidence: the Western model as we know it is dying as new paths open up on the horizon of humanity.

#ARQUITECTURA - Maison Hermès Le Forum por Renzo Piano (Tokio 2001 ) + #ARCHITECTURE - Maison Hermès Le Forum by Renzo Piano (Tokyo 2001)

Of all the art forms, architecture is the one that makes me think the most. For some reason, I get spellbound, absorbed, and captivated by its magnetism, which manages to calm the beast I carry—or believe I carry—inside.

Renzo Piano's Maison Hermès in Tokyo is one of those buildings I could stare at all night, completely drawn in by the hypnotic quality of its glass and steel. Its facade is not static; in fact, it changes completely depending on the time of day. While the sunlight creates a fascinating kaleidoscopic effect during the day, the building transforms into yet another luminous beacon in the city at night.

I'm fascinated by the idea that if this building's frequency could be translated into something we understand, like music, its tune would be this:

A Walk Through Francoist Urbanism

Spain offers numerous examples of this. A prime case is the Badajoz Plan, which not only transformed the landscape with its irrigation systems but also saw the birth of newly established towns. These urban creations emerged under the umbrella of the autarky policy implemented during the dark years of Francoism, aiming for the country's economic self-sufficiency.

Ciudad Pegaso: An Emblematic Example

Of that "new urbanism of the empire," Ciudad Pegaso in Madrid stands as the best example. This mini-city was meticulously planned around the Pegaso truck factory. This factory was owned by ENASA (Empresa Nacional de Autocamiones S.A.), an entity linked to the sadly defunct INI (Instituto Nacional de Industria).

This neighborhood was conceived as a self-sufficient community, equipped with everything necessary: from a school, church, and company stores (a great social invention!), to sports fields, various types of housing, and cinemas, among a long list of services. The underlying idea was that the factory worker wouldn't need to leave the neighborhood, nor—and this is crucial—interact with workers from other factories. In this way, the Francoist leaders aimed to break the Marxist principle of working-class unity.

Design and Social Stratification

This magnificent work, which I consider another great urbanistic invention, was designed in the 1950s by architects Francisco Bellosillo García and Juan Bautista Esquer de la Torre. Its design, especially in the residential area, clearly reflects the social and professional stratification of the factory workers. Thus, we find larger single-family homes for engineers and executives, contrasting with the apartments intended for lower-ranking labor categories.

A Must-Visit

If you're passionate about history and urbanism, Ciudad Pegaso is a place worth visiting. It's located at the end of Calle Alcalá, in Madrid's San Blas-Canillejas district, bordering the A-2 highway.
