#DISEÑO #CARTELES - Bauhaus 1923 + #DESIGN #POSTERS - Bauhaus 1923 + #设计 #海报 - 包豪斯 1923 + #DESIGN #AFFICHES - Bauhaus 1923

The impact of the Bauhaus never ceases to amaze me. Delving into the history of this school of design and applied arts is like throwing a window wide open: you instantly feel a rush of fresh air sweeping away the stale, stagnant, and predictable elements of a world that resisted change. In essence, it was a sanctuary for brave minds; young people who threw themselves into the great adventure of revolutionizing our visual culture.

The poster we are looking at today is the perfect reflection of that spirit. A true geometric marvel that encapsulates the freshness I am talking about.

Take a good look at it. It’s a blazing sun—one of pure creative justice—that dazzles anyone who lays eyes on it. Its premise is as simple as it is spectacular: a series of black solar rays capable of transmitting all the light and warmth that sustain life on Earth. No gimmicks.

Sometimes we insist on overcomplicating things, but great graphic design doesn't need to. This poster works because it is direct, magnetic, and captures the attention of those of us who appreciate art in its purest, most elemental state. Its geometric approach simplifies its surroundings, yet it possesses a gravitational pull that forces you to stare right at it.

That was the Bauhaus: the great factory of ideas where the future we live in today was designed.

#ARQUITECTURA #DISEÑO - Escalera por Oscar Niemeyer + #ARCHITECTURE #DESIGN - Staircase by Oscar Niemeyer + #建筑 #设计 — 奥斯卡·尼迈耶设计的楼梯 + #ARCHITECTURE #DESIGN - Escalier par Oscar Niemeyer

"This staircase by Oscar Niemeyer is more than just a functional element; it is an authentic structural fantasy. Faced with the historical imposition of the right angle—where lines intersect in a way that often lacks reflection, yet which I defend for the harmony and serenity it projects—today I must surrender to sinuosity.

Where architecture usually seeks the rigidity and order of rectitude, Niemeyer proposes an insurrection of the curve. It is a constructive caress that defies gravity. This staircase is, in essence, a river: a channel through which people flow, carrying with them the experiences and cultural sediments from every corner of the world. In this descent, there is no need for canoes or ships; we navigate it with our own steps, guided by the rhythm of the design.

As the Brazilian master himself professed:

'It is not the right angle that attracts me, nor the straight line, hard and inflexible... What attracts me is the free and sensual curve—the curve I find in the mountains of my country, in the sinuous course of its rivers, in the waves of the sea, in the body of the beloved woman.'

Before such a declaration, my rationalist convictions feel defeated. That is the nature of absolute truths: they admit no reply. But what has truly shaken my intellectual foundations is that final analogy: 'in the body of the beloved woman.' It is a statement of such resounding and real honesty that it turns architecture into something carnal—an idea that, quite simply, is beyond debate."

#DISEÑO - El "ojo" del cine español: Nostalgia y cubismo en Estudios Picasso + #DESIGN - The "eye" of Spanish cinema: Nostalgia and Cubism at Estudios Picasso +#设计 - 西班牙电影之“眼”:皮卡索工作室的怀旧与立体主义 + #DESIGN - L'« œil » du cinéma espagnol : Nostalgie et cubisme chez Estudios Picasso

Who doesn't remember series as iconic as 7 vidas? For many, it represents one of the heights of comedy on our television, but beyond its scripts, there is a visual element that has always remained etched in my memory: that corporate image that preceded every production. It isn't just a matter of branding, but of the sheer strength of its Picassian aesthetic. From my perspective—perhaps subjective, but always passionate—this logo is an authentic visual marvel that immediately invokes the genius of the great Pablo Picasso.

This film production company has always been intrinsically linked to the history of private television in Spain and the arrival of Telecinco during the Berlusconi era. Over time, the brand evolved through names like Producciones Cinematográficas Telecinco before becoming the current Telecinco Cinema. And although the current name is effective, I confess I am still "in love" with the original identity of Estudios Picasso because of the artistic depth and soul it projected from the very first frame.

We are looking at a purely Cubist design, a masterful interpretation that draws directly from the visual language of the Malaga-born genius. Its large eye is not a mere ornament; it is a statement of intent that emphasizes that cinema is, above all, the art of the gaze. Through this organ, we achieve cinematic vision, observing with equal intensity both the beauty and the horrors that surround us. It is a piece of design that transcends the commercial to become an ode to observation, reminding us that the origin of all creation is always born from what we are capable of seeing.

+ #DESIGN – The visual enigma of Spanish Public Television’s Segunda Cadena: Design or sculpture?

There are logos that do more than just represent a brand; they encapsulate an era. The design of what was then known as TVE's "Segunda Cadena" is, without a doubt, one of them. It is a marvelous, daring, and incredibly avant-garde piece that was, however, misunderstood by the general public of its time.

This isotype, reportedly attributed to the designer Emilio Sáenz, accompanied the second channel's broadcasts from 1962 to 1991. Its arrival broke the mold, even if years later the currents of "new image" and digital modernity turned everything upside down—a necessary evolution with which, in essence, I do not disagree.

If we observe with a critical and perceptive eye, it is impossible not to detect the profound influence of Eduardo Chillida. The logo breathes that same telluric force found in the metal sculptures of the master from San Sebastián; in fact, it wouldn't be hard to imagine this piece forged in iron presiding over any contemporary park or garden.

The most fascinating aspect is its construction: all the letters are linked in an exercise of infinite continuity. There are no cuts, only a constant evolution that seems to symbolize the fluidity that should define television as a public service. Furthermore, it possesses a special mystique; it has an almost heraldic nuance evoking blazons or coats of arms of ancient nobility, but filtered through the lens of geometric abstraction.

Often, the value of great design milestones only becomes evident when time removes them from our sight. In my case, I wasn't fully aware of its brilliance until it vanished from our screens forever, leaving us with the memory of a visual identity that, more than a logo, was a work of art.

El arte de viajar: la edad de oro del cartelismo turístico en España + The Art of Travel: The Golden Age of Tourism Posters in Spain + L'art du voyage : l'âge d'or de l'affiche touristique en Espagne +旅游的艺术:西班牙旅游海报的黄金时代

MIGUEL SÁNCHEZ

MARIANO BERTUCHI

HERMENEGILDO LANZ

EDUARDO SANTONJA

ANTONIO VERCHER

Once again, we revisit the fascinating relevance of tourism posters—and indeed, posters of all kinds—pieces that transcend their advertising function thanks to their exquisite designs. These posters did more than just sell destinations; they captured the essence of adventure and discovery that defines any memorable journey.

The most captivating aspect of these works is the strength of their visual message. Through warm palettes and bucolic scenes, artists succeeded in exalting the monuments and landscapes of a Spain that, at the time, was beginning to emerge as a true tourism powerhouse. The message was direct and vibrant: an irresistible invitation to discover our sun, our beaches, and the inexhaustible richness of our history.

Most of these pieces were commissioned by the Patronato Nacional de Turismo (National Tourism Board) starting in the 1920s. With these lines, I seek to pay a well-deserved tribute to their creators—artists who shaped our visual identity and who must not be forgotten. Without a doubt, we are looking at authentic gems where art and promotion merge to narrate the history of our heritage.

Making a gate is a form of art, whether it's the work of a master blacksmith or the result of industrial design. Here we have an example of one that belongs to a shop in Santa María del Tiétar, which I've brought to you here because of its unique characteristics. These gates are industrial in nature, but it's important to understand that they have a prior design.

A Walk Through Francoist Urbanism

Spain offers numerous examples of this. A prime case is the Badajoz Plan, which not only transformed the landscape with its irrigation systems but also saw the birth of newly established towns. These urban creations emerged under the umbrella of the autarky policy implemented during the dark years of Francoism, aiming for the country's economic self-sufficiency.

Ciudad Pegaso: An Emblematic Example

Of that "new urbanism of the empire," Ciudad Pegaso in Madrid stands as the best example. This mini-city was meticulously planned around the Pegaso truck factory. This factory was owned by ENASA (Empresa Nacional de Autocamiones S.A.), an entity linked to the sadly defunct INI (Instituto Nacional de Industria).

This neighborhood was conceived as a self-sufficient community, equipped with everything necessary: from a school, church, and company stores (a great social invention!), to sports fields, various types of housing, and cinemas, among a long list of services. The underlying idea was that the factory worker wouldn't need to leave the neighborhood, nor—and this is crucial—interact with workers from other factories. In this way, the Francoist leaders aimed to break the Marxist principle of working-class unity.

Design and Social Stratification

This magnificent work, which I consider another great urbanistic invention, was designed in the 1950s by architects Francisco Bellosillo García and Juan Bautista Esquer de la Torre. Its design, especially in the residential area, clearly reflects the social and professional stratification of the factory workers. Thus, we find larger single-family homes for engineers and executives, contrasting with the apartments intended for lower-ranking labor categories.

A Must-Visit

If you're passionate about history and urbanism, Ciudad Pegaso is a place worth visiting. It's located at the end of Calle Alcalá, in Madrid's San Blas-Canillejas district, bordering the A-2 highway.

The 860-880 Lake Shore Drive Apartments in Chicago stand as an emblematic example of the genius of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the undisputed father of 20th-century design. Built between 1949 and 1951, these two apartment blocks, situated nearly perpendicular to each other, are a testament to his architectural philosophy.

Mies van der Rohe championed the straight line, steel, and glass, elements that define the aesthetic of these structures. The buildings embody pure functionality, rejecting any superfluous ornamentation. Their design delves into a world of practicality and simplicity, serving a clear purpose: to be livable spaces, nothing more, nothing less. More than seventy years after their construction, these towers remain a benchmark in modern architectural design.

Before the euro's invasion, the peseta was the currency circulating in Spain. And before the establishment of liberal democracy, which has wrecked us, the peseta was also the official currency. Today, I want to talk to you about a particular piece: the 50-peseta coin, popularly known as "diez duros" (ten hard ones).

I'm not interested in its numismatic value, but in its design. Since my childhood, I've been fascinated by the image of the eagle holding the coat of arms of that era (Francoist, villainous), a symbol of the various territories of the Spanish state. Curiously, the eagle flies to the left, a detail that invites reflection. If you'd allow me to speculate, I'd say that the future of this country lies, paradoxically, in a turn towards that same direction.

The Bauhaus universe (before Marvel and all those modernities) is a fascinating journey, a look at the past projected into the future. Before this revolutionary and comprehensive movement, which encompassed all disciplines of art, I commend my spirit.

This poster encapsulates, although more adjectives could be added, the essence of the Bauhaus: simplicity, practicality, magic, color, geometry, and elegance. Its masters bequeathed us universal knowledge, spreading it throughout the world as the apostles propagated their message.

A doctrine? A veneration? Perhaps both.

Barcelona is one of the great architectural and cultural centres of this country called Spain.

Here is one of the wonders of modernism, specifically one of the stained glass windows of the Casa Amatller built by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Modernism is that artistic movement that runs between the 19th and 20th centuries and that meant a reset to everything that came before. Barcelona is the great architectural receptacle of it and as my wife always says, the Catalans are the smartest.

That stained glass window tells me everything; a geometric and hypnotic beauty breaks up the intense light of the Mediterranean, leaving anyone who stops for a few seconds in front of it absorbed. This must be the same way that any of us could have a Marian apparition. Its glass is a bath of amazing colour and could be considered one of those current therapies that are so popular, and that could go from a persistent rheumatism to an evil eye.

In short, Barcelona, no matter who it may be, is the cradle of art and before it I surrender my armies.

#CARTEL #DISEÑO - Cartel de 1963 para Deutsche Bundesbahn. Próxima estación: ¿Ulm? + #POSTER #DESIGN - Poster from 1963 for Deutsche Bundesbahn. Next station: Ulm?

Simplicity is harmony, I've said it a few times. This poster of the German railway lines is that way, simple, and it's so simple that it catches my attention at the same time that what I perceive is movement even though it is static and there is no expressive feature of that action used by advertisers when it comes to drawings. The colors that it shows us are practically basic and warm, which immediately catches our attention and invites us to do just that, to travel to discover.

An interesting piece to have in my living room.

77 - #FOTOGRAFÍA - LA IMPERCEPTIBLE ESQUINA OLVIDADA / #PHOTOGRAPHY - THE IMPERCEPTIBLE FORGOTTEN CORNER

Can you imagine a world without corners? Beauty and harmony would be very limited, since the imposition of the corner immerses us in the most reassuring sensation. That is why Greek temples enjoy that majestic beauty that invites us to embrace their archaic religions and fall on our knees before their presence. Then came the Romans and became the true masters of the arch, transforming buildings into a mixture of arches, columns with their styles also mixed, and the corner that holds different straight lines, and that the inventors of the same were from ancient Mesopotamia.

But the photograph that heads this post is about corners, corners to build things, to design things, as did the great masters of the Bauhaus, today converted into a large surface from which one can buy from a light bulb to a strip of artificial grass and that as far as my knowledge reaches, have nothing to do with it, but even so, because of the fact that it bears that name, it attracts me like a bear to honey.

This is a corner of any table anywhere. The corner has been a part of us since we started making things with our hands so as not to live like animals. It is represented in the foreground, giving it the importance it deserves and that is why it is the protagonist of our image of the day.
