#PINTURA - La Verbena de Maruja Mallo + #PAINTING - La Verbena by Maruja Mallo

Talking about Maruja Mallo is referring to a fundamental figure of the Generation of '27 (Generación del 27), an artist whose career embraced both magic realism and surrealism. Her legacy commands profound respect, not only for her talent but also for her active participation in the Spanish artistic avant-garde. Furthermore, she was a staunch defender of feminism and freedom in a European context polarized by antagonistic social models.

To contextualize the work to which we are referring—identified as La verbena (1927)—it is necessary to point out that it represents a lively popular festival in Madrid. A plethora of characters is displayed within it, wandering immersed in the revelry of the celebration. This impressive canvas is configured as a "pictorial collage" where motley figures are juxtaposed: ranging from the Guardia Civil and sailors on leave, to costumes, giants and big-heads (gigantes y cabezudos). All of them are compactly represented, almost like a mural intended to be exhibited in an official space.

The unique formal rigor of the faces of some protagonists in this painting leads me, in an interpretive and bold manner, to propose the concept of Neogrequismo (a denomination of my own creation). This style approaches the hieratic quality of the icons of religious representation of the Eastern Orthodox Church, a characteristic that directly recalls the treatment El Greco gave to the figures in his canvases. Coincidentally, this rigor in the faces that I place in my Neogrequismo is reserved for figures that symbolize authority, such as the civil guard (guardia civil) and a character who evokes Queen Isabella the Catholic.

We are, without a doubt, facing a pictorial work of great interpretive depth, whose possible readings are as numerous and diverse as the people who approach it with humility and open-mindedness to contemplate it.

#PINTURA - DOS ESCALERAS POR Gertrude Abercrombie + #Painting - Two Ladders by Gertrude Abercrombie

This painting by Gertrude Abercrombie brings me an inner peace that comes from its strange balance. It's the image of a night without stars, and I would even venture to say, without wind. Just a waning moon and a solitary cumulus cloud above a carefully arranged stage, where some abandoned stairs make me wonder: am I on a theater stage, in an opera scene, or in a dream I don't want to wake up from?

"Don't let anyone wake me up!" I would yell from a room at the far end of an infinite hallway in one of those old houses. I want to keep dreaming (looking at) this painting that torments me because, in a way, it forces me to reflect on... who knows what!

The stormy sea this work by Gertrude has made me travel to, despite the monotonous balance of the painting's first glance, makes me want to climb those stairs as the last earthly action I want to perform, heading to that cloud, or that moon, leaving behind the worldly noise we've had to live with. Seeing things from above, not without a lot of sadness for the loved ones you leave behind, provides a perspective close to the vision of God with his ultimate power.

It's a pleasant night, as I said before, without stars or wind, where I, as a normal human being, look from my earthly position without trying to be God, after waking up from the slumber that made me dream, immersed in a philosophically restorative dream.

#PINTURA - CRISTO DE SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ POR DALÍ / CRISTO POR SAN JUAN DE LA CRUZ + #Painting - Christ of Saint John of the Cross by Dalí / Christ by Saint John of the Cross

Two Visions of a Faceless Christ: Dalí and Saint John of the Cross

Two masterpieces invite us to reflect. The second is an ethereal, dreamlike vision that the mystic Saint John of the Cross drew from his time in the Convent of the Incarnation in Ávila. The first is a reinterpretation of that image by, we could say, the mystical surrealist Salvador Dalí. In a fascinating crossover through time, both artists present us with a crucified Christ whose face remains hidden.

Dalí was directly inspired by Saint John of the Cross's dream to create his impressive work. This Christ, with the world at his feet, is overwhelming in its profound emotional weight. The absence of a face adds a powerful mystery: without seeing the suffering, we are compelled to feel it.

Separated by time, both Christs share the same vision: that of an unknown Christ. The irrelevance of the face seems to suggest that what is truly important is not his physical identity, but the transcendence of his sacrifice. His face doesn't matter; what matters is what he did for humanity. But the ongoing search for God and understanding his work is also important.

In my opinion, these are the most moving representations of the Son of God. Believers and non-believers alike can immerse themselves in the immense emotional weight of the crucifixion of an innocent man, unjustly executed by the will of a people.

#PINTURA - Petanca nocturna de René Magritte + #PAINTING - Night Boules by René Magritte

Let's challenge the perception of the world! Down with academicism! Let's live with freedom! That's Magritte for you, a "horrifying" man in the best sense, for he throws us into the abyss of reflection, stops us dead in our tracks in this whirlwind, and forces us to look differently, to shift the focus, to see beyond the canvas. Welcome to the world of the "demented"! This painting illustrates it perfectly: day and night, up and down, on a bridge to nowhere, and two staircases ascending, inviting us to observe reality with a renewed gaze, a double vision that questions us face to face: What is happening? Why this urge to think, to unravel the proposals of art? Personally, this work instills calm in me; its impeccable harmony subjugates me like feminine beauty, it attracts me, disarms me before contemplation, similar to the devotion of a believer before a divine image. Although praying to materialism is heresy, what a temptation!

#PINTURA - Cumpleaños por Dorothea Tanning + PAINTING - Birthday by Dorothea Tanning

The prolific creator Dorothea Tanning is to Surrealism what Salvador Dalí was to all fields of the arts.

This painting caught my attention not because of the added surreal peripherals that appear, such as the small dragon and the multitude of half-open and successive doors that indicate the path of life, which open and close in our path, but because of the protagonist, with a certain air of Gala, Dalí's companion, who appears and attracts me in such a way that I cannot take my eyes off her. Beautiful, somewhat absent-minded, with a lost look, waiting to make the journey, or not, between those mysterious doors (pure quantum art) and, above all, a spectacular body, with proportionate and beautiful breasts, transmitting an uncontrolled desire for a voyeur that I feel myself to be at this very moment.

Sinful confessions aside, this painting is a perfect symphony written by the best composer in the world, where everything and nothing (surrealism) fits perfectly, although blinded by the beauty of this beautiful woman I am unable to see beyond. I'm sorry.

#PINTURA: Estudio del retrato del Papa Inocencio X de Velázquez por Francis Bacon 1953 + #PAINTING: Study of the portrait of Pope Innocent X by Velázquez by Francis Bacon 1953

The "Study of the portrait of Pope Innocent X" is saying a lot since it seems more like an eternal condemnation than anything else, I tell you. For me, the study of this Pope on a painting by Velázquez but with a new vision by Francis Bacon inspires me, tells me, whispers to me, that it is a representation of a man of the Church that on the one hand shows us earthly glory and on the other hand the condemnation in the worst of hells (again the duality of art). It reminds me a lot of the deaths of the bad guys in the film "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in which the perfidious Nazis are condemned to the underworld with their faces melted for defying the will of God.

It is a ghostly painting that tells us about the afterlife where reality becomes alarmingly blurred, the harmony of beauty disappears with a stroke of the brush and transfers them to another reality perhaps, in the field of philosophy or nonsense.

And that's all I can say (because I don't know what else to say).

#PINTURA - El falso espectro, 1928 por René Magritte + #PAINTING - The False Spectre, 1928 by René Magritte

An impressive work by René Magritte. A giant eye that observes us while showing us the outside; a blue sky with clouds, nothing more. Perfect duality; we do not see the inside of his thoughts (you can tell a lot about people by their gaze) but the other one, the one in front, analyses us trying to hypnotise us with that peaceful and reassuring sky. Surrealism is like that; shocking while playing with us with its shapes and colours. A perfect artistic psychoanalysis where not only our Self emerges, but our other Self, that is, it makes us participate from two different positions, us and the other of us entering into a sensitive vortex that is difficult to keep at bay.

It is the force of gravity in art.
