What a great style those video tape covers had!
I can’t help it: I have a particular weakness for good design. It is a form of art and, as such, I believe it deserves to be appreciated.
That’s why I can’t resist sharing these designs for the covers of those video tapes so familiar to those of us who have been around for a few years. Objects that were once part of our everyday lives and that we probably barely paid any attention to. Today, however, I look at them with different eyes, and I find them particularly appealing.
They are truly beautiful, ingenious and, in many cases, surprisingly innovative pieces. They were designed to achieve something both simple —and remarkably difficult—: to capture our attention as we walked into a shop and browsed the shelves looking for a blank VHS video tape.
Because design is, although I’m not particularly fond of saying it, also about the marketplace. It is a call for the consumer’s attention, an invitation to stop and look, and ultimately, a way of selling us a product through the way it is presented. In a single image, it has to convey trust, quality and personality, and even awaken the desire to take that product home. And achieving all of that is by no means easy.
I have had many of these brands in my hands, and there are still a few of them somewhere around the house. Who knows… Perhaps, without realizing it, I have been collecting little works of art all these years.
